Muay Thai / Kickboxing Level 1 & 2

Muay Thai is a ruthlessly effective kickboxing style that uses stand-up striking and clinching. It is a very popular class for people who want to improve their fitness or train for competition. Each class you work with a training partner to practice attacks and techniques on the punch mitts and kick pads. Muay Thai is known as “the art of eight limbs” because it uses hands, feet, elbows and knees to deliver strikes. It has developed in Thailand since the middle of the 18th century and is a cornerstone of modern MMA.

Once the coach thinks you’re ready, students are welcome to join our intermediate-level classes, where we take the foundation learned in the introductory class and amp it up a few notches. The intermediate class focuses more on sparring drills and the reality of the fight.

We always leave pools of sweat on the mat. Be sure to hydrate well.

Level 2 determined by evaluations and by invite only. Please contact the gym before attending Level 2 classes for the first time.

WHAT TO WEAR: Wear something comfortable, like shorts and a rash guard or sports bra, and bare feet. We supply boxing gloves and shin pads for your trial class and you can buy your own at the front desk.

Boxing

Boxing at AMMMA will develop you as an athlete and fighter and take you as far as you want to go. In our classes, you’ll learn the fundamentals of the “sweet science,” starting with good footwork, bobbing and weaving, head movement, punching, and correct body mechanics. The focus is on athletic development and skill acquisition. As you progress, you’ll learn advanced punching combinations and how to develop speed and power.

Once the coach thinks you’re ready, students are welcome to join in the sparring sessions and they are invited to do another 15 minutes on their own after class. Training suggestions are to work the heavy bags, weights, crunches, skipping rope, etc.

WHAT TO WEAR: Wear something comfortable, like shorts and a rash guard or sports bra, and bare feet. For your trial class, we supply boxing gloves and you can buy your own at the front desk.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a modern grappling style that focuses on ground fighting, using leverage and good technique to apply joint locks and chokeholds to defeat an opponent. It is known as a method that permits a smaller person with sufficient technique to defeat a larger and stronger person. It is a popular but demanding style that builds physical fitness and character through the intensity of its training. Each class ends with about 45 minutes of “rolling” to integrate your knowledge.

BJJ was developed in Brazil throughout the 20th century from an earlier fighting style that originated on the battlefields of 15th century Japan. A number of students at Angry Monkey regularly compete in BJJ tournaments under the Brazilian Top Team affiliation and the guidance of Coach Alexandre Arteau.

WHAT TO WEAR: A Jiu-Jitsu gi (uniform) and bare feet. Gis come in blue, black, and white. They have the Brazilian Top Team and Angry Monkey patches.

Women's Kickboxing

Women’s Kickboxing and Conditioning Bootcamp is focused on conditioning and fitness using the fundamentals of kickboxing for a dynamic and--above all--fun class. Kickboxing draws its core curriculum from the long tradition of Muay Thai training. This class focuses on conditioning because it’s hard not to notice how great the fighters look after a workout! For starters, think about the fact that your leg is about one fifth of your body weight. Now do twelve kicks on the heavy bag! With each leg! To do each kick you recruit muscles from your abs, your hip flexors, your thighs, your glutes--and at the same time counterbalance with muscles from all over your body. Then there are the combinations. Each class presents a wide variety of functional exercises for body toning, cardiovascular conditioning, coordination, agility, balance, and how to attack with fists, elbows, and knees. Expect to burn 500-700 kcals per class! You’ll leave glistening. WKB is a wholebody, non-contact, sweat-drenched experience. All levels welcome.

NEW: Classes are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Saturdays, WKB members have “Carte Blache” and can attend any/all classes on Saturdays which Include Boxing, Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu!

CLASS LENGTH: 1 hour

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu

No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is a variation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu trained without the gi (the uniform). It is a fast-paced class with more transitions than classic BJJ classes. It is an essential part of MMA training.

WHAT TO WEAR: Wear something comfortable, like shorts and a rash guard or t-shirt, and bare feet.
